Do you love J.K. Rowling books? Good news, the renowned author of the Harry Potter series has written a children’s book – and is releasing it to the public to read online for FREE!
Rowling is offering her new children’s book, The Ickabog for FREE online – 1 to 2 chapters at a time! She first wrote this book over ten years ago as a bedtime story for her younger children, and now she’s offering this online version at no cost as a gift to kids, and to encourage families to read together.
From May 26 to July 10, the author will be posting a chapter or two every weekday — FREE for all to read.
The Ickabog book will be properly published in November 2020, with all of Rowling’s royalties going to people who have been affected by the current worldwide health crisis.
She does mentions, “It isn’t Harry Potter and it doesn’t include magic. This is an entirely different story.”
“I had the idea for The Ickabog a long time ago and read it to my two younger children chapter by chapter each night while I was working on it. However, when the time came to publish it, I decided to put out a book for adults instead, which is how The Ickabog ended up in the attic. I became busy with other things, and even though I loved the story, over the years I came to think of it as something that was just for my own children.
Then this lockdown happened. It’s been very hard on children, in particular, so I brought The Ickabog down from the attic, read it for the first time in years, rewrote bits of it and then read it to my children again. They told me to put back in some bits they’d liked when they were little, and here we are!” – J.K. Rowling

Have a little artist at home as well? Rowling invites children around the world to illustrate her story as it unfolds online. Parents and guardians can enter their children’s hand-drawn or hand-painted artwork into an official Ickabog Illustration Competition being run by J.K. Rowling’s publishers. For more details, instructions and themes go to the Illustration Competition page here.
You can also share the illustrations on Twitter using the hashtag #TheIckabog – J.K. Rowling has been sharing and commenting on her favorites. Note: Twitter submissions do not constitute an entry in the competition – she is not part of the judging committee. You must enter at the publisher’s competition page.
